'93 lesabre coolant leak behind the throttle body

93 Buick Lesabre
189,000

History, had a significant leak with a steady stream and since I had a similar leak about 8 years ago, and it was the water pump, I replaced the water pump again.

The leak is still there and upon closer examination (should have looked closer the first time, I discovered the leak is originating from somewhere behind the throttle body when the engine is running but can't see the source.

I don't see any hoses / bypass in that location? I plan on removing the throttle body to look behind but once I remove it won't be able to start the vehicle to isolate the leak.

Any thought, intake gaskets, etc.?

If you remove the throttle body, you must replace the seal. FEL-PRO Part # 61037. Can you post a pic of the leak & location?

here is the pictue, it appears to be coming from the area where the throttle body attaches to the intake manifold.. not sure if it is coming from around the bolts. The pen is pointing in the general direction of the leak

May be LIM gasket, but if you are planning to pull the T/B anyway, replace the gasket & see what happens.

You may find that the upper intake (plenum) is deteriorated and needs replacing also.

thanks, will be removing the UIM today, If it look bad/cracked will replace it and plan to replace the upper and lower gaskets and throttle body gaskets.

I would have just replaced the throttle body gasket first, to see if that solved your problem......

Re: '93 lesabre coolant leak behind the throttle body

Thanks everyone,

The intake manifold was cracked and warped near one of the O-rings and based on the discoloration around the area, this was where the leak was coming from.

I replaced the intake manifold ($149) plus the lower gaskets ($20), fuel injector O-rings and also replaced the thermostat since it was out anyway and it now runs GREAT, no leaks!!

Although now the engine now runs hot. about 250, (redline is 270) thermostst is OEM 195

as an added note I also replaced both the temp sensor and the temp switch since I damaged the connectors trying to get them out. the are in the correct position and the connectors are attached.

Could this just be an air lock in the sysytem, the wrong sensor/switch (I checked the part #'s twice and both seem and look OK)
or did i miss something altogether?
