Way wrong! the STI has 300 at the crank, like 276 at the wheels, so 280 at the wheels is awsome for a stock STI. and the Evos 271 is also at the flywheel just like EvoCrazy said.

Re: EVO 8 VS 1069 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Yea, and the Evos only have around 230 HP to the wheels. Hard to bealive a car maken 230 HP at the wheels can do 60 MPH in under 5 seconds. Thats why I like the Evo. A good price, for a fast car.

It's all in the AWD, the EVO is a very quick car but they are not particularly fast, and AWD dyno lower.

Note that even though they do the 1/4 mile at about 13.1-13.3 their trap speed is only around 103 MPH. In fact most of the ones I've seen are only trapping around 101-102.

My very close to stock 2001 Camaro SS runs the 1/4 consistent 13.1's but...the trap speeds are 106.5-107.5, showing the real HP of the SS.

Although a very close race in the 1/4 mile with stock tires, with slicks the SS would run 12.80 or better and out on the open highway the SS would eat the EVO alive, and it tops out well past 155 MPH too.

AWD is great, but some folks get a bit short sighted when it comes to how fast an AWD car is versus how quick it is.

I'de STILL take the Evo over the SS. I dont rellay like American cars, and I've been a fan of the Evo for so long.

Re: EVO 8 VS 1069 Ford Mustang Mach 1

I prefer to have both types, AWD/Turbo & RWD V-8, hence my Talon and my SS. Actually, LOL the SS was built in Canada!

Seriously though, I like the EVO/STI ,was going to buy one or the other, but...after driving em they seemed too slow on the highway for my tastes, and I do a lot of daily highway driving.

The SS is a monster on the highway, hit it at 70 and it 's drops to second and will litterally snap your neck back.
My SS feels stonger on the highway than my Talon did when it was running mid 12's.

Just got the new issue of Motor Trend in which they compared the EVO MR and the STI.

HP @ the wheels (both have 7000 redline):
EVO: 239 @6400
STI: 233 @5500

Torque @ the wheels ("):
EVO: 248 @3750
STI: 249 @4000

I converted the numbers to what they would, be at the crank, with a 15 percent drivetrain loss and a 17 percent dirvetrain loss:

Horsepower
EVO: 281.17 @6400
STI: 274.11 @5500

Torque
EVO: 291.76 @3750
STI: 292.94 @4000

I will also post the acceleration numbers, so the trap speed questions can be answered.

0-30
EVO: 1.5
STI: 1.2

0-40
EVO: 2.4
STI: 2.2

0-50
EVO: 3.6
STI: 3.2

0-60
EVO: 4.7
STI: 4.7

0-70
EVO: 6.4
STI: 6.4

0-80
EVO: 8.2
STI: 8.5

0-100
EVO: 13.1
STI: 13.2

1/4 mile
EVO: 13.3 @102.2
STI: [email protected]

MOTOR TREND figure eight (EVO has the handling edge)
EVO: 25.70 @0.70g
STI: 26.07 @0.70g

Road Course (Streets of Willow Springs)
EVO: 1:34.38
STI: 1:35.37

Slalom
EVO: 70.1mph
STI: 69.7mph

BTW the EVO won the comparison.

Re: EVO 8 VS 1069 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Well the sad part is the is the MR, AND they said the STI felt soft, I would attribute that to whatever they did to the timing map to get rid of the detonation issue the STI was having.

i would go for the MR, but i actually prefer the g35 or the 350z to the sti and the evo. i own a g35 sedan, so i guess i am biased. yet, i have a feeling that the stock evo will fall flat on its face in most highway races. i hear that anything in 5th gear w/a stock evo is painfully slow (ovbiously not civic hb slow, but significantly less than what one would b expecting, aerodynamics aren't the greatest either). 350z with supercharger of turbo kit would b my choice

Re: EVO 8 VS 1069 Ford Mustang Mach 1

I LOVE the 350Z AKA Fairlady Z33 in Japan, but I would still take the Evo over it. But if I cant get an Evo, I think the Z33 Track would be my second choice.

Back on topic.

If I recall correctly, most of the 69 Mach 1’s came with the 351 Cleveland, options were 428 Cobra Jet with and without Ram air and 428 Super Cobra Jet.

I think the EVO can take the 351 cid Mach 1 and should have a reasonably good shot at taking the Boss 429 in the ¼. The EVO should do even better against them 0-60.

The only info I have for the top performing Mustangs from 69-71 are as follows:
69 Mach1 428 Cobra Jet, 335 HP. 13.90 @ 103
69 Boss 429, 375 HP. 13.60 @ 106
71 Boss 351, 330 HP. 13.80 @ 104
