Porsche 914-6 Waldegaard Rallye Monte Carlo 1971

The Porsche 914 is very rarely seen in modeling. Maybe it is not as popular as the 911 but it did have some good results in circuit racing and in rally. It's best results, a third place was achieved by Waldegaard in the 1971 Rallye Monte Carlo, behind two factory Alpines.
Revell has an old 1:25 kit of the car but since my example was badly damaged and broken, I was happy to see the affordable Historic Racing Miniatures transkit. The kit comes with the desired wide wheelarches and plenty of excellent parts. The only thing you need to get from the recommended Fujimi Enthusiast 911 kit is the engine and the mirrors. Since I don't have that kit, I used the revell engine which is not too bad base if you add some details to it. The only drawback of this excellent transkit is the window flash which is as thick as the roof itself, so you need very careful trimming, preferably starting with a motor tool with a circular saw. My example had a bent nose so it needed some filling, but he front bumper needs some change to represent the rally version anyway. My other struggle was with the front windsield, which I ended up using the trimmed one from the Revell kit. I changed few things in the interior, notably the seats, gearshift housing and the dashboard. I scratchbuilt the old style "Repa" seatbelt buckles (never heard the name before). The color is the original Porsche 1410 Signal Orange automotive spray, mixed at a paintshop and only polished, not clearcoted. In my opinion, these old cars, especially rally cars, look strange when they soaked with 2K clearcoats... I will use the excellent Fuchs wheels from the transkit with the authentic Dunlop tyres from Fireball Modelworks Minilite wheel set. This is my second Porsche kit and since I am not a Porsche expert, any comments are welcome.

I did the master for this kit - I hope you like it.

I built mine as the '70 Le Mans winner.

Unhappy Re: Porsche 914-6 Waldegaard Rallye Monte Carlo 1971

Hi Afxracing, Thank you for making such a lovely kit! It is really a good one with only minor things to correct. I have seen your excellent build of this kit which inspired me and that is why I bougt it. The details you have changed on the chassis, body and interior is really good to represent the 914-6 widebody. I hope to finish it soon! Chris24, The Celica is nearly finished, currently I am experimenting with an authentic representation of the dust and mud on the body. I want to make someting not permanent so I can adjust the wear and tear on it after painting. The closest I can get is guash colors applied with the mix of alcohol and hairspray. Still experimenting though...

Re: Porsche 914-6 Waldegaard Rallye Monte Carlo 1971

Little progress with the Porsche: I made a quick mockup to check the stand of the car then glued the chassis with the body. Unfortunately I did not have much authentic reference for the engine bay so I only put few basic things and some wires in it.

Very nice indeed. The engine's detail under the grill are a superb touch!

Re: Porsche 914-6 Waldegaard Rallye Monte Carlo 1971

Thank you all for your comments. I managed to do some more progress today with the suspension and wheels glued in place. I still need to find some reference for the skid plate and the muffler. Unfortunately there are not many original reference photos exist from this car. As I see from the photos, the front left wheel might need a bit more camber...

Re: Porsche 914-6 Waldegaard Rallye Monte Carlo 1971

Hello all, finally I managed to make some progress on the Porsche. I put some subtle weathering on the car and worn off some decals from the side, as saw on some photos, to make it look a bit closer to a rally battered car. Still missing few things, wipers, mirror, rear mudflap and the rear Porsche logo. I hope to finish it soon now
