I completely agree with Rather b boating. It could be a starter issue. They can be intermittent and difficult. If you have it happen again, before you jump start it, if you are familiary with where the starter is located, try tapping (with a little bit of force) on the starter. See if this makes a difference. Sometimes you can move the brushes just enough that it will allow the car to start.
Another thing to do is to make certain the battery connections are tight and good. If you have any corrosion on your battery it can cause poor connection, as well as if you have a loose cable connection.
Both issues would cause your car to be doing what you describe. It does not sound like a bad battery or an alternator problem.
