Unhappy A6 Quattro Tire/Transfer Case Issue

I just bought a 2001 A6 Quattro and hit a pothole that ruined the two tires on the right side of the car. I had them replaced with new tires, but the tire shop is telling me I have to replace all 4 tires due to the tread levels being uneven between the new tires and the existing tires. They said it will cause big problems with my transfer case, eventually ruining it unless I repalce all 4 tires at the same time. It would be good to know if this is nonsense or the truth. If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: A6 Quattro Tire/Transfer Case Issue

This is an old thread but there is limited truth. The circumference of the tire has to be great to damage the "transfer case". That is why both front and rear axles have a "differential". Part of the design is to "accept" wheel speed changes on turns. Total circumference must not be greater than 7mm between each tire or expect the ABS to see the wheel speed difference and set an ABS fault.

Preferred, replace all 4 tires.

Re: A6 Quattro Tire/Transfer Case Issue

Unless his wheels are staggered he should be able to rotate the wheels with new tread on the front and place the wheels with old tread on the back and things should be cherry.

As long as the axels have the same tread depth on both ends there should be no problems.
