Crankshaft variance learn procedure

Awhile back I replace my crankshaft position sensor. I never did the learn procedure. I have AutoEnginuity software that can do this. I started the process and followed the instructions given on the screen. Set parking brake. At one point it said to go to WOT. wasn't real comfortable with doing that in park. I did for a moment. RPMs went up but something seemed to kick in an keep engine from over revving. I backed off. The process didn't complete or I didn't do it right or wait long enough.

If you don't do this process what is the impact? Car seems to run ok.

Re: Crankshaft variance learn procedure

Your PCM (or ECM) will not be exactly calibrated to the position your crankshaft so there is a possibility that sometime in the future your check engine light will come on with an error about random misfires or misfires on specific cylinders. Otherwise, if you don't get the light, you will be OK...I would do the relearn, though, since you have the software to do it.

I had this on a GM truck when I switched the PCM out for one that increased performance. First time I did it I didn't have the check engine light but when I had to send it back and get a new one, I got the light. Had to have the relearn done at a local garage.

Your trigue can't rev past 4000 in park or neutral so that's likely why it cut off. Just follow the instructions and run it up to max...don't back off...you won't hurt it. My truck revved up to 6000 when they did it...That got everyone's attention.

Re: Crankshaft variance learn procedure

I tried the procedure again last night. My scan software says to set parking brake and hold brake pedal down. I start the test. It then says to increase to WOT. It does say for how long. I push pedal down and RPM goes to just over 4000 and engine starts to cut out. I hold there for awhile but the software doesn't say anything after that. After waiting a bit I release pedal and it says procedure failed. I have no codes set that I know of.

I found the following procedure. Should I be getting to 4050 and wait for second cut out and then release pedal?

Set the parking brake.
Block the drive wheels.
Close the hood.
Start the engine and allow engine coolant temperature to reach at least 70°C (158°F).
Turn off the engine, then turn the key to On.
Select and enable the Crankshaft Position Variation Learn Procedure with the scan tool.
Start the engine.
Wait until instructed by the scan tool, then apply the brake pedal firmly.
Ensure that the transaxle is in Park.
Increase accelerator pedal position until the CKP System Variation Learn fuel cutoff is reached at 4050 RPM. Release the accelerator pedal after the second fuel cutoff is reached.
The crankshaft position system variation compensating values are learned when the RPM decreases back to idle. If the procedure terminates, refer to the Important above for instructions.
Observe the DTC status for DTC P1336.
If the scan tool indicates that DTC P1336 ran and passed, the Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn procedure is complete.
Use the scan tool to clear any DTCs. DTC P1336 will not automatically clear after a successful learn procedure. DTC P1336 will not clear from memory if the learn procedure was unsuccessful.

Re: Crankshaft variance learn procedure

I'm no expert but I have seen that procedure posted elsewhere as the standard procedure for doing a crank relearn with a Tech II scanner (GM's proprietary software.) I believe it is crucial that the engine is operating at temperature, though, so if you were doing it from a cold start, you might want to warm it up and try again.

The guys who did mine (on my truck) were using a Snap-On scanner but I believe they followed generally the same procedure. And it took several seconds at WOT before the scanner indicated that it was done.

If it doesn't work with the engine warmed up, I would be going to customer support at AutoEnginuity as it's likely something peculiar with the Intrigue.

Sorry I can't be of more help. There are other forums out there that may be more useful...ones for other GM products where you can swap PCMs (Vettes, chevy trucks, etc.) You may want to do some more searching. As far as I know there are no PCM upgrades for the Intrigue so folks here may not be able to help.

Re: Crankshaft variance learn procedure

I did have the car warmed up. I had just gotten home from work. I sent a note to support for my scan software. There is a point update of there software but the release notes don't say anything about this issue. I didn't know by WOT if the software mean press it to the floor or hold it at highest RPMs before it starts to cut out. Tried both. Didn't try what I had found in my last post about releasing the pedal after the second fuel cut out.
