2002 Grand Am won't start

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. I bought it used a couple of weeks ago and haven't had any problems with it. Now today it randomly won't start. When I try to turn it over it makes the sound like it's going to start, but it doesn't engage. The battery is fine- the lights and radio work. When the key is in the 'on' position all the dashboard lights come on briefly and then the 'service engine soon' and 'battery' stay on. I'm really worried that I got swindled. Are there any suggestions on what this could be? I'm hoping it's a cheap fix...

Do you mean the engine is turning over with starter but not firing??? Have you checked for spark??? Have you checked fuel pressure??? Do you hear the fuel pump when you turn the ignition on without starting engine??/

Try tapping the fuel tank to see if that will jar the fuel pump loose and start, if so fuel pump will need replacing.

Have you checked for any codes, since the engine soon light stays on???

Try spraying some starting fluid in the throttle body to see if it will run then??

I'm pretty sure it's the fuel pump. I don't know enough to fix that, so i'm just going to take it into the shop. Thanks for your help!

If you think its the fuel pump check the relays first they are alot cheaper and easier to fix. i beleive the fuel pump relays are under the hood near the firewall the fuse cover top should tell you which one it is. If nothing else have some 1 listen near the tank when u try to crank the car to see if the fuel pump is coming on also you could check for fuel pressure in the fuel rails. you could have a very clogged fuel filter. Hope that helps.
