95 camry, check eng light on, shorting TE1 and E1 doesn't work

I have a check engine light, and I have tried the key to on, in nuetral, engine off, then short TE1 to E1 on the "DLC1" (maybe the same as a OBD1?) diagnostic port. But when I do this (I thought I should get the check engine light to flash the code of what is wrong) the check engine light just stays on.

My problems seem to be from cold weather. I start my car, it revs up normal then just dies out. If I then tap the gas while starting it will stay going ( I can stop tapping when engine is warm). Also my acceleration is slow and my MPG is down to about 18mpg. When I put the pedal to the floor I dont get the regular fast acceleration, engine does not rev up it almost seems to be "bogging out" or not accelerating at all?? BUT in nuetral it revs up just fine!!

Any Ideas on how to get the check engine light code out of my car or the root of my cold weather problem would be appreciated.

Re: 95 camry, check eng light on, shorting TE1 and E1 doesn't work

If you have the 4 cyl engine you have the OBDI system and should be able to check the codes as you describe. If you have the 6 cyl engine you have the OBDII system and will have to use a scanner to check for codes. 1995 was the transition year for the OBDII conversion. Check the white emissions sticker under the hood. It should tell you which system you have if there's any doubt.

Re: 95 camry, check eng light on, shorting TE1 and E1 doesn't work

RIP's got it right. 4-cyl is OBD-I, use the jumper. 6-cyl is OBD-II, use scanner.

The only time I have experienced what you describe (starting the car, it idles for a second or two, then dies), is when I was working under the dash to remove the blower motor. I forgot to reconnect the wires to the ECM box. Strangely, I don't recall getting a CEL though.... Might have a loose connection, but try to get the codes first. Good luck!

Re: 95 camry, check eng light on, shorting TE1 and E1 doesn't work

I want to thank you guys for you input.

I tried it again with the same result. But then I tried something stupid
I jumpered "+B" and "E1" on my OBD1 diagnostic port. I saw a little spark, my check engine light went out, and now my car only CRANKS when I try to start it. When I turn the key I don't here the fuel injection going either, it just cranks!!!

My camry is built 11/95, when I went to check my fuses, (none are blown) since I thought I blew one when I crossed the wrong connections of the diagnostic port guess what. I FOUND AN ODB2 PORT!!!! So now my check engine light is out and my car only cranks.

Does anyone know of a fuse or electronic device that deals with the fuel injection that could have blown from making the wrong jumper on the diagnostic port?

Look under the hood fuse and relay box for a blown fuse in there...a couple of fuses that control the fuel injection and ignition there.

Re: 95 camry, check eng light on, shorting TE1 and E1 doesn't work

I checked the fuses, didn't find any blown from visual inspection. I will double check. Could I have blown one of the Relays, or would a fuse go first?

Re: 95 camry, check eng light on, shorting TE1 and E1 doesn't work

I double checked the fuses and I found an EFI 15 amp fuse blown. So I will change that and see if I can get the engine to fire.

Thanks again for all of the input!!!!

Car now starts, so I'm back to my original cold start problem. But I found an OBD2 port. So I will get the codes and we will hopefully continue?

"My problems seem to be from cold weather. I start my car, it revs up normal then just dies out."
For what its worth I would do some simple cleaning of the intake Throttle body. The start up-idle-then die on acceleration sounds like the area to look at especially in cold or very cold weather. Open it up and spray it clean as you can sopping up the gunk with some paper towels.Try and get the IAC. Run some SeaFoam through the vacuum line. Under 10 bucks for the materials.

"My camry is built 11/95"

The production date of 11/95 should make your car a 96. Both the 4 cylinder and the 6 cylinder for 96 should be OBD2.

That said, after you get the codes read report them back here and someone should be able to give you some direction. If you have Autozone in your area they will read the codes for you for free.

Re: 95 camry, check eng light on, shorting TE1 and E1 doesn't work

Again I want to thank everyone for their input
My code read, Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor bad. I got one on ebay, replaced it and problem solved. So a cold weather start problem could be a bad MAP sensor on a Camry(reading the code helps alot!!)
Thanks again, and yes my car does have an OBD2 port behind the ash tray/compartment to the left of the steering wheel(for a 96 Camry 4 cyl 2.2L)
