replacing kia rio speakers, any advice?

I got a 07 Kia Rio, and was looking to replace my front driver/passenger panel speakers.

I checked the guide at walmart, and found my door speakers are 6 1/2" inches. Well, is there any way of figuring out, or knowing how "powerful" (waters, rated power, etc) the speakers that are in there right now are?

I went ahead and bought some Sony 6 1/2" - 270w Peak Power, 50W Rated Power speakers (it was a good deal..hehehe couldn't pass it up), but want to make sure it's an "upgrade" and not a "downgrade" before I go changing anything.

I have the VIN number of the Rio, would that give me any information as far as what kind of speakers are in their now?

Also, are they any risks involved with upgrading the speakers, but not the stereo? I'm not a big audio guy, I'm not doing it for competitions or anything lol...so I don't got an amplifier or anything...my brother was saying if I put too big of speakers in the car it could blow the stereo and/or the battery...is that true?

Sorry for the many questions, kind of a newbie to car audio

Overall my current (stock....afaik, it was bought used but I doubt they modified the speakers) system isn't bad, but there's a slight rattle in the front speaker so was looking for an upgrade/replacement, but I don't want to go blowing any fuses/wires/battery or the stereo...lol.

Re: replacing kia rio speakers, any advice?

stock speakers generally handle about 8-10 watts RMS. Some aftermarket speakers are less efficient than the factory ones so may not be as loud but almost all sound better. The size of the speakers does not damage the amp, it's the load they present - many subs are wired to 1 ohm, whereas the headunit amp is designed to run 4 ohms per channel.
