Repair 1994 with a bent axle after hitting a curb

Spun the car in the rain and hit a curb on the drivers side.. Hit hard enough to break the rear rim. Cobra R's with 245/45/17 so not much tire between the road and the rim. Got new rims but after very short test drive realized the axle is bent and the bearing is probably bad. Any advice or gotcha's with buying a new axle and replacing would be much appreciated.

1. I need only 1 axle but should I replace both just cause ?
2. I have some engine and tranny experience but never replaced a rear axle, do I just un bolt and pullout old or is the bearing pressed on or into the housing. I will get a book but any advice would be helpful.

THanks in advance.

Re: Repair 1994 with a bent axle after hitting a curb

Finally changed the axle. A few lessons learned:

1. Never rotate the wheels once the large pin is removed. Two of the diff gears can fall out easily. Once one is out you need to take the other out as they need to rotate back in together.
2. Read about the rear disc brakes before doing anything on them. They require a special tool. Also don't accidently hit the brakes after the caliper is off, the piston comes out all the way.
3. You can't pull out a wheel bearing with anything other than a slide hammer bearing puller ($100 for a cheap one).
4. In our case some extra force (via a C-Clamp) is needed to push the axle in enough to get the C clip off.
5. The Ford friction modifier fluid needed for posi-rear smells terrible.
