HELP!! engine noise
engine makes a (rather faint) tapping noise when I try to accelerate. I am kind of confused, because it is good during idling(so it can't be the engine!) and it is also good when I'm driving but not pressing on the gas pedal(so it can't be transmission/tires!)
noise is present only when I try to accelerate, around 40 MPH. its a Mazda Protege 2001, manual transmission. |

Re: HELP!! engine noise
The engine being quiet at idle don't indicate the engine is good. It can have a noise under load and be quiet at idle or no laod speeds. Sounds like you may have a spark knock, (pinging). A little better description of how the noise you hear sounds may help.

Re: HELP!! engine noise
Your car should have a knock sensor. Sounds like you are describing spark knock. Check the knock sensor and replace it if bad. I don't know where it is on your car but it is probably bolted to the block.
