Greetings.
This is my first post, so bare with me. 2003 Windstar with 155000 miles I'm getting a grinding noise after start up, which then trips the abs light and the brake light. After that, the noise goes away until the next time i start . I have determined that the ABS sensor module is faulty. when i pulled the fuse, the noise stopped. I read that the unit does a self test every time the engine is started, put into gear and once motion starts. At this point i don't know if the problem is with the electronics and/or the solenoids. even if i were to replace the unit , i think i need to program it. Has anyone had experience with this problem? I did a complete rebuild of the brakes, including the rear drums (not fun) in my quest to find the source of this noise. The front pads are at 40%. The rear pads are needing replacement. fluid level remains constant. thanks |

Re: 2003 Windstar ABS problems
I'm wondering if there is an issue with one of the wheel speed sensors?
If the grinding sound goes away when the ABS is disabled.....then one would look away from a mechanical brake issue....grinding pads/shoes, etc. Once the ABS / Brake lights come on.....the ABS system has been disabled, which is in line with the noise going away both when the lights come on and when you remove the fuse. Getting the code(s) read would be a very good first step. You may have to have a shop do this if the Generic OBDII code reader does not bring up the brake system code(s). The ABS light being lit is an indication that you DO have braking system codes set.
