Tamiya McLaren M8A spray color

Tamiya lists TS56 brilliant orange for their McLaren M8A kit, has anyone used that color and if so is it correct?

No, TS-49 Brilliant Red is for the Mclaren F1 cars, if you're doing the M8A that would be a Can Am car, which was an orange colour. Hiroboy has colour matched paint for it, not sure if Tamiya has one thats close or not.

Hi David,

TS49 is bright red and can be used on most of the Ferrari F1 cars from 2000 until 2003. The Mclaren M8A is not an F1 car, but a Can-am car. TS56 is a perfect match for this car IMHO. So you can use it without any problems. I think it was designed for this model. I'm going to use TS56 on my M8A, because i think it's a perfect match.

Opps you're right I was thinking of TS-36 Flourecent Red for the Mclarens.

I don't think it's a perfect match but it is very, very close. Probably the closest you'll find in a spray. I've worked as a pit marshal for SCCA for 26 years and have seen quite a few of the Can-Am McLarens at the vintage events at Road America. But I would bet that if you put most of them together side by side they would all vary slightly in color. I've used it on a Heller McLaren M7B and I think the TS56 is just a teeny bit too yellow.

Hi Mike,

I just compared photos I have of your M7B at NNL North 2010 with the ones of Bob Maderich's recent 1/43 M8D Can-Am model that he painted with Model Car World's McLaren orange (same camera and viewing both in iPhoto), and you are right that the TS56 is a tiny bit yellow compared to the MCW paint and photos in the books I have, although a person probably wouldn't know without something to compare it directly with. I haven't seen a sample of the Zero paint but assume it's accurate due to their reputation.

So looks like MCW or Zero are the ones to go with depending on what you can get where you live, while the Tamiya TS56 is "close enough" if you prefer Tamiya paint, or if the MCW or Zero paint are not available for you.

But I'm a firm believer that whatever color LOOKS right to the builder is what's important, especially since colors can vary from example to example in photos (which are all most of us have to look at) or even if lucky enough to see the cars in person. So the TS56 should be fine. I intend to use it on my next McLaren!

I used normal spray acrylic shade RAL 2000 during the construction of my MPC M8D 1/20

TS-56 is meant to represent Repsol orange which is definitely different than McLaren orange.MCW's paint code is the same for the two paints so one of them is incorrect.I see that Hiro Paint lists different stock numbers for the two colors so I'd lean more toward believing that the Hiro color is correct.
