It depends on the printer. Most printers use a special formulated composite plastic. Each printer company has their own formula/recipe for their plastic. Some use a nylon like material, others use an acrylic like material. Every printer is different.

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

Awesome work guys. Can someone give some tips on a good program to use to start playing around with creating in 3D ? I have tried Tinkercad and 123DAPP. I dont believe Tinkercad is sophisticated enough for say a wheel but 123DAPP looks like it may be. I have not tried sketchup yet. Any recommendations fellas?

Sketchup is free, I use the free version anyway, and quite capable.
I think it is easy to use too.
I tried Blender too, but I found sketchup more to my liking.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

Sketchup! Lots of tutorials, it's free, there is an STL plugin so you can send the file to be 3d printed, the learning curve is not too steep (I'm lookin' at you Blender). Now you can make anything, ANYTHING, you want in 1/24th.

Re: shapeways 3d printed wheel

With Sketchup you are your own 3D designer. Your only limit is your imagination.
