Transmission Fluid??

Has anyone used the Dexron/Mercron fluid or does the Mercron V need to be used?

Parts stores usually point you towards the Dexron/Mercron fluid.

I am plannung on doing a compleete fluid and filter replacementon a 98 with a 3.0 engine.

thanks

Re: Transmission Fluid??

Hi Larry,

I don't know what a '98 model calls for transmission fluid; if it says regular mercon/dexron then go ahead. Even when the TSB says that you should be using mercon v because of its backwards compatibility, the transmission was designed to work with regular mercon and you should have no problems.

If it call for mercon v, then stay away from any other and just use what it calls for. Using other type of fluid will cause it to breakdown prematurely and cause increased wear to internal parts. The guy who rebuilt my transmission used regular mercon fluid and it was NASTY after 6 months and 5k miles...

Oscar.

Re: Transmission Fluid??

Thanks Oscar,

I used Mercron V from al mart.

I wanted to take the cooler line off the transmission but could not get it off.

I tried the smallest size fuel line too;l but that did not seem to work (too big???)

Any idea on the size of tool needed??? I woukld like to get the line off at the tranny and remove all the fluid, as the magnet had a good sum of clutch material on it.

226k on original tranny with a 3.0 engine.

Re: Transmission Fluid??

I don't know which size it could be; when I do mine, it only takes a quick pinch with my fingers to remove the quick-connect fittings (it can be scary because it feels like it's about to break!).

I'll take a look at the manuals and see if it says anything about the required tool.

Oscar.

Re: Transmission Fluid??

Thanks Oscar,

The manual I have says the tool number is T90T-9550-B (5/16). I have the lisle set of disconnects but does not seem to work because the cupler has a fflat side to it if I remember correctly, not allowing the tool to slide inside the coupler. I will check parts store for a Ford specific

Well Larry, I've read both, mitchell and ford, manuals and none mentions anything about a disconnect tool; I find it very odd. The Ford one might be because only covers 00-04 years.

Is there any chance that they could be like mines? I remember many users talked about them too. You only push the line, pinch both sides with your fingers and pull it in roder to remove it. You might to give it a try.

Thanks again Oscar,

I will give that a try this weekend if not raining like it has been the last few days here.

That could be the trick, there is a clip that needs to be removed first, evidently the clip is a safety feature in case the line does disconnect during vehicle operation.

Re: Transmission Fluid??

I worked on removing the line again today, There are not any tabs to squeeze in order to release the line. I also tried the tool on the upper line and it would work there. Looking at the coupling again I find that the coupling is out of round so the tool will not work on the lower line. My only way of disconnecting th line is either turn the coupling out of the transmission or cut the steel line flush the system and then use a proper size hose to slide over both ends of cut line and doulbe clamp bothe ends. This should work being it is the return line.

Any thoughts.

Re: Transmission Fluid??

Today I cut the metal line part of the return line and flushed the tranny with Mercron V. Then used a piece of 5/16" ID transmission cooler line to reconnect line with 2 worm hose clamps on each end of line. No issues.
