Hi, my Tahoe needs a new catalytic converter. The mechanic gave me a high price for the job. Does anyone know of the cheapest real way to fix it? I'm seeing cats range from $75 on ebay to $500 at PepBoys. Is my original welded or bolt-on? Will a cheaper cat keep my servine eng light on? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

normally these fail because of a specific component failure . what cause this to fail and how did it fail. restricted / code failure etc...? a performance muffler shop can do this with the best results. some times when these O2 sensors get old 100,ooomi they can create false failure codes. If you do not work on vehicles get another mechanic to check it out. could be something else . |

Re: '01 Tahoe Catalytic Converter?
It always good to get a 2nd, or 3rd opinion.
You could always use a H2O cheater down stream to fool ECU until OEM catalytic converter replacement. Buy OEM replacement @ www.catalyticconverterwarehouse.com , and have a local muffler shop do the install. I take WMT gift cards for beer! Last edited by danielsatur; 09-22-2012 at 08:30 PM. |

Re: '01 Tahoe Catalytic Converter?
I need a catalytic converter. I have a loss of power, it feels like the exhaust is blocked, it's giving a P0300 code, and white smoke is coming out of the tailpipe.

a restricted converter should throw other codes no just the p0300 random miss fire. I would have the fuel pressure measured the pressure must be above 52psi with the engine running. key on engine off 60-62psi area.should hold for several minutes/not fall off rapidly. usually these converters go for about $300. a cheap one will not last and may cause restrictions/loss of power. did the mechanic test for restricted exhaust ? if not this may be the fuel pressure low. very common with low power P0300. |
