2005 ford taurus (will not idle)
I have a 3.0 v6 ford taurus that will not idle. I took the converters off because I was informed that was the problem but it still will not idle. could someone tell me some tests I could do to eliminate some possible causes. thank. I can start it when I give it gas and it will stay running fine if I keep giving it gas but as soon as I let off the pedal it dies.

Re: 2005 ford taurus (will not idle)
That normally is a result of a dirty or bad Idle Air Contol Valve (IAC). Clean with carb cleaner and see if that helps.
Hope this helps |

Ok. I bought some cleaner yesterday. I will go try cleaning it and see if that helps.

Re: 2005 ford taurus (will not idle)
I took off the sensor and sprayed it. It looks pretty clean. If it was the converters and I removed them shouldnt it be able to idle? Even ifthe o2 sensors are off?

Re: 2005 ford taurus (will not idle)
No - You need the upstream H20 sensors as a feedback signal so the ECU/PCU can
formulate the proper Air/fuel mix. Also clean MAF sensor with CRC electronic or MAF sensor cleaner. |

Re: 2005 ford taurus (will not idle)
Other than stalling when returned to idle, does the engine seem to run okay? If you hold the throttle slightly open, will the engine stay running at, say, 800 rpms?

Re: 2005 ford taurus (will not idle)
Yeah the engine runs fine when I give it gas. It sounds smooth. it will turn over with out me giving it gas but then dies. The converters are off right now. I was told it was those. Can u test your converters to see if they are stopped up when they are off the car? I ordered some new ones but I can always return them when they get here. Im just really dont know whats wrong with it.

Re: 2005 ford taurus (will not idle)
If you have an air compressor and a pile of rags you could pack a blow nozzle on the inlet side of the converter, pull/push the trigger, then see if you get a pretty solid flow of air out the outlet of the converter. If instead it blows the rags out from around the blow tip, you have a lot of back pressure and the converters are restricted.
