'87 Buick Century 2.5 TBI Sedan Flooding

Hello,

I did a search and did not find an answer to this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an '87 Buick Century with the 2.5 Lt. TBI 4 Cyl. engine and it is flooding, preventing the engine from starting. When I turn the ignition key to "run" (even before "start") raw fuel is dumping into the throttle body and flooding the engine. The fuel sometimes drips from the injector and some times there is a slight vibration/buzzing sound coming from the injector area. Not sure if the injector is firing or not?

I cleaned the MAP sensor and replaced the injector but that did not resolve the issue? Anyone have similar problems and fix? What should I be looking at next? Fuel pressure regulator?

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance,
Gary

There are possibly two issues here, either the computer is telling the injector to open prematurely and flooding the engine or the injector is bad and needs replaced. Sometimes when injectors go bad they will stick in the open position. Once fuel begins to flow from the pump they will spray large amounts of fuel into the engine. I would try replacing the injector first before doing anything else.

He said he replaced the injector......Disconnect the injector......have someone crank the vehicle....spray carb cleaner into the throttle body......adjust the spray so the car idles normally(can "pulse" the spray)....if the car idles ok, and if the replacement injector is ok, are there any codes? If none, or there are multiple ones, chances are you need a new ECM.....if you replace it, make sure you also get the latest PROM......

Yes, I did replace the injector. The car will run once it gets started. It's just as soon as you turn the key to the "run" position, before the starter even engages, it seems to shoot fuel out the injector? Enough to flood the engine before it can catch. I did not check the codes yet but will do that.

Thanks for the reply,
Gary

Sorry for the oversight on not seeing that the injector was replaced. Check the cold air sensor in the air intake. If it is not sending proper temps to the computer it can cause the excessive fuel to the engine and a flooding issue. Having the codes read will help determine what is going on but if there are no codes then you will have to try to fix it by trial and error by eliminating things one at a time.

Just for follow up and historical purpose but I replaced the ECM and that resolved my issue. I ordered one from Autozone and swapped the PROM from my original to the replacement. After a little trying, the car started and I've been driving it now for a few days with no issues.

Thanks,
Gary
