Ac compressor air gap

Getting a whine / metal on metal noise from my ac compressor, right at the pulley. Sound goes away when ac is turned on.

From what I've read, sounds like the air gap needs to be adjusted on the pulley / clutch assembly, but I can't find a link or post that shows how to do this......any help?

Re: Ac compressor air gap

What year Blazer? Can't see it from here- does make a difference. You can borrow the clutch puller tool from Autozone and pull the driver back to make a gap of .020".

Re: Ac compressor air gap

The gap is usually adjusted by adding or removing shims located on the compressor shaft just behind the clutch hub. They're like small washers. But its rare to have to add shims. It usually works the other way around. I would check the hub plate and springs themselves. You could have a broken hub plate spring. Turn the hub by hand,(engine off of course). See if the hub rotates evenly and the gap doesnt change. If it does theres a broken spring and you'll have to replace the hub.

Re: Ac compressor air gap

It's a set of leaf springs. This is a common issue, easily solved by bending the leaves back unit a gap is achieved. I've done quite a handful that way. The toughest part is on wrong-wheel-drive car and getting good access to the clutch.

Re: Ac compressor air gap

You need to reset your air gap. Get a proper puller tool and clean out the threads in the clutch hub and pull it out to about .020" gap, what you have if light and tinny/hissing sound is clutch drag noise. If its a deeper growl, perhaps it may be the pulley bearing.

Re: Ac compressor air gap

Jeff

Do you have or can you provide a pic with exactly where I'm going to be measuring the 0.020"?

Thanks!

Re: Ac compressor air gap

Brcidd;

Wow; REALLY small world! I drove by your place all the time! I was at 553 Woodbury Court. Live in Minneapolis now, but really miss the small town feel of Troy! Is LaPiazza still around?
