Changing CV Axle.
My (wife's) van is a 2000 Windstart with 135, 000 km and 3.8L V6.
During take off, it started the distinct "clicking". It's not there during turning. But when you drive off, or change from reverse, stop, then go forward, it will click 2 to 3 times. Not all the time, but I think more than half the time. I'm thinking it's one (hopefully not both) CV axle assemblies. I haven't gone under the van to confirm and check which one. Is this a do it yourself job for a shadetree mechanic? Are there special tools I'll need? Or am I better off leaving this to a pro? Thanks. |

Re: Changing CV Axle.
Usually, not always, a failing half-shaft will have noticeable splits in the dust-boots.
It is a bit of work, the strut usually has to be detached from the steering knuckle and from the rod ends. It's best to jack up both sides of the car, even tho you may only be removing one side. Certainly doable for the skilled DIY'r. Check to make sure you have the socket necessary for the main axle nut before getting started. Some shafts can be difficult to remove from the tranny and the front bearing hub ... but the few times I have removed shafts from the Winnie ... they have all come loose very easily. This is work I would do myself ... or have a dealer do it ... as the bearings are easily damaged (never use hammer!) and one needs this stuff put together correctly. Make sure you torque main nut properly ... with wheels on ground and handbrake engaged ... do not put this load on tranny park gears!! |
