94 Crown Vic stalling while driving

Hi! I need some help. I have a 94 Crown Vic, and it has less than 100,000 miles on it. For the past 3 weeks it has been having stalling issues. I will crank it up and let it warm up. Once I start driving down the road, it chugs, and then completely loses power. It not only dies at stop signs, but also dies as you are driving down the road. I am not sure what is wrong with it, and I am looking for any help and suggestions I can get. I know one of the things I should check is the spark plugs and wires, but I really don't know what to look for, or what a "bad" one looks like. So if you do have any suggestions, step by step instructions would be great.

One more thing, the car will die, then I will put the car in park, wait a few seconds, and it will start right back up. Usually what happens is after I crank it back up, I will drive a little further, and it will die again. It does this up to 4 times, and then it will drive fine, like nothing ever happened.

Any help at all with this will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
Kim

Re: 94 Crown Vic stalling while driving

If it has not been tuned up in a while, plugs and wires are in order. An Air filter and fuel filter is also included in the tune up. Then have the fuel pressure checked. It should be around 32 psi while idling. It should jump up to a little over 40 psi when stomping the accelerator. The Idle Air COntrol valve could also be starting to fail. it is located down on the back of the engine just to the drivers side of center. Let us know what happens.

Re: 94 Crown Vic stalling while driving

Thank you for the suggestions. We replaced the plugs and wires, and also the fuel and air filters. Car still stalled, so next will be checking the fuel pressure. Can you tell me where on the car the IAC is? Also the PCV? We are going to try and do as much work at home before we take it to the shop. Thanks for all your help.....

Check the hoses going to the throttle body also. Theae are bad about collapsing where there is a "T" connection just to the passenger side. The Idle Control valve is located down behind the intake just tp the drivers side of the throttle body. It is very tight there and might cause some bad words to be said. Yours will be similar to the picture below. You might need a flashlight to see it.

Re: 94 Crown Vic stalling while driving

sounds Like your oxy sensor is possibly bad I had the same type of issues on my 97 the oxy sensor is Located on the tube that goes to the air filter intake it's all one piece Like a Round tube body you can usually find one at a junkyard just undo the 2 hose clamps and unplug the connector and it most Likely is the problem sure sounds Like it to me from my experience but that's my guess

i,m trouble shooting a cruise control problem but sometimes only a shop and their expensive testing crap finds certain problems.. and I hate paying shops I can Fix almost anything on a car Good Luck!

Re: 94 Crown Vic stalling while driving

h3wk, the sensor you are describing is the Mass Air Flow sensor, not the oxygen sensor. Please be sure of the information you are supplying is correct. Thanks.
