I have a 1999 4.7 grand cherokee with 181000 miles. Started hearing knock in engine 2 weeks ago. It sounds louder on passenger side and higher towards head rather than lower around crank. The sound hasn't gotten any worse. I don't have much experience with sohc engines. Could this sound have anything to do with the valve train or is it just wishful thinking that it is'nt a rod?

Re: High engine knock 1999 g cherokee
An engine bearing would be a deeper klok klok klok from lower down, so from your description it sounds like valvetrain noise.
Has the temperature in your area suddenly gone colder in the last 2 weeks? What grade of motor oil are you using? A heavier oil in colder temps can cause valvetrain noise.

Re: High engine knock 1999 g cherokee
Early model 4.7s had a problem with the upper cylinder heads clogging up and destroying the cam bearings and/or camshaft(s). You won't really know what the condition of the engine is until you pull off a valve cover. If you see sludge, you'll need new heads.

Do a compression test on all cylinders on suspected Bank.
