1994 AWD Front leak w/pictures
Hey guys i have a 1994 astro ext van awd cambridge edition. It has 275,xxx miles on it and still runs strong. Couple days ago i noticed a leak, well a drip, and not constant. Looks like it was driping from the front diff on the drivers side now take in mind it does not grind, pull, make any type of noises. Which makes me think that there is nothing broken i have taken a picture so you guys can see what is going on here. Some people say that the axle poped out but if the axle poped out wouldnt it affect the right wheel in any way. Im just confused and need some help i love the astro i bought because it was awd snow came and i cant use it any advice would be good thanks. Dont mind the date on the picture it was take couple days ago. Oh yeah and i forgot to mention like i said its a awd the front tires are 215/75/r15 and the back tires are 235/75/r15 would that have anything to do with it.

Re: 1994 AWD Front leak w/pictures
It appears to be the output shaft seal. Front axle shaft must be removed to replace the seal. With AWD & 4WD, all 4 tires must be the same size, (best if they're the same manufacturer), and tire pressure must be equal in all 4 tires. Difference in tire size probably didn't cause the leak, but it will cause other problems.

Re: 1994 AWD Front leak w/pictures
From the photo, it appears that the CV may not be fully seated into the differential housing. If you can easily move the body of the CV in and out, it isn't locked into the retaining groove provided in the stub shaft. That may indicate other problems.
As the Master indicated, running different size tires will quickly destroy the transfer case. You'd be lucky if it hasn't done so already.

It would be best for the AWD to be on the same size tires all the way around.

Re: 1994 AWD Front leak w/pictures
Width is not the problem, circumference is where the problem is. The 215's turn 728 revolutions per mile, and the 235's turn 698 revolutions per mile, and that's a substantial problem when it comes to AWD, 4WD, ABS, and the speedometer. The difference in RPM WILL cause a problem. As Blue Bowtie mentioned, you'd be lucky if it hasn't destroyed the transfer case yet.
