ABS reset?

Is it possible to reset an ABS light without a scan tool? My sister has a 2000 Lesabre. I noticed the ABS, Traction off and Brake light on.
She told me they have been on for some time. And she had it checked by someone. He told her there was nothing wrong with the ABS system, that it was an electrical problem. And will take time and money. I drove the car and I can lock up the tires, so I'm thinking there is a problem on the ABS. Any htoughts on this? And can you reset the ABS without the scan tool? Everything is appreciated.

Re: ABS reset?

The EBCM, (Electronic Brake Control Module) clears all DTC's, (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) when the ignition is turned off, (DTC's must be retrieved before turning the ignition off). The EBCM runs a self test each time the ignition is turned on. It completes the test after the vehicle is in motion and the speed sensors are checked. If/when a fault is detected, the ABS light is illuminated and the DTC is set. If the ABS light is illuminated when driving, the antilock function is disabled. DTC's remain in the history file and can only be viewed and cleared with an ABS scan tool that is capable of accessing the history file. If the fault is no longer present after a preprogrammed number of self tests, the DTC will be deleted from the history file.

I had the same problem. I took it to a dealer and they scanned it with their scan tool and it came up right away that it was a loose connection at one of the computers. They tightened the cable and all is well. Only cost 70$.

Re: ABS reset?

Looks like I must have the scan tool. Tough to troubleshoot otherwise. I've read about disconnecting battery. Where might I get a reasonable cost scan tool? I still like to do my own trouble shooting. Thougtht about taking readings at the ECBM connector and checking all the circuits. But, could cause more trouble.

Re: ABS reset?

Actron makes some decent reasonable scanners.

Re: ABS reset?

It depends what systems you want to be able to access, (engine and trans, ABS, HVAC, air bag, transfer case, body computer). Powertrain code readers do just that, read the DTC's in the powertrain only, that's all, and they start around $30. If you want to retrieve DTC's and monitor data as it leaves each sensor, or do functional tests on actuators, or be able to reprogram/flash the modules and clear memory files and history files, you'll need a bi-directional scan tool with full access. They start around $5000 and go up from there. A decent one for the average DIYer runs around $500. There are some software programs you can load onto a laptop that are pretty decent. They're not nearly as versatile and convenient as a hand held units but, they are cheap and easy to update from the internet. Do your homework and decide what you want it to do, and how much you want to spend. The more you spend, the more it will do.
