2006 Camry - new brake pads, grinding noise

I have a 2006 Camry LE. About a month ago I had the front brake pads replaced and rotors cut (68,000 miles). I'm the third owner but have the service records. I purchased the Camry at 41,000 miles. the rotors were cut at 35,000 miles because the owner complained of shuddering when braking. About a 2 days after replacing the pads, my brakes starting grinding when stopping and got progressively worst. My mechanic re-surfaced the rotors. This worked for one day and the grinding has started again. I believe he used Napa Ultra Premium brake pads.

is this a simple matter that the rotors need to be replaced or could there be another problem?

^ In addition to what Inafogg stated, it can also be the composition of the pads themselves or the lack of using the proper Toyota or aftermarket shims to eliminate the noise. Since you paid to have the work done, advise your mechanic that the problem is still there. It should be up to him or her to resolve the issue.

I'll ask him about the shims and replacing ther rotors. Originally I had told him to replace the rotors if necessary. So i was prepared to pay fo rthem anyway. I'll offer to pay for the rotors and he can cover the labor.

thanks

Re: 2006 Camry - new brake pads, grinding noise

1) Make sure the pads/backing shims are seated properly against the piston bore...remove any rust.
2) Make sure the caliper pistons have free movement inside the cups. They should be retractable with ease using a c-clamp or other spreader tool.
3) make sure the calipers slide freely on the mounting slide pins.

Any one of these can result in misalignment of the pads against the rotors causing uneven pressure across the pad/rotor interface.

Semi-metallic pads are also harsher on rotors, so beware of their use.

Re: 2006 Camry - new brake pads, grinding noise

Follow-up: My mechanic decided to replace both the pads and rotors with Toyota parts. Based on what everyone has been posting, I guess the pads were too rough on the rotors and causing the grinding. New pads and rotors solved the problem.
