hey max wedge or whoever, mass flow air sensor

my light came on for the mass flow air sensor,i assume its the square box betweew the rubber hose from the throttle body to the air box,i had a 99 malibue with 3100 in my yard so it looks the same and fits the same so i put it on my 3400 impala, the part numbers are off by a few numbers but it fits and works fine,my light is gone out, whats the difference in the mass flow air sensors from a 99 malibu 3100 to a 3400 impala, they both look identical and the car works fine, however because my light came on the car did'nt show any signs of engine failure as in missing, hesitating, ideling or any power loss so whats the funtion of the mass flow air sensor

It uses a pre heated wire that measures air flow across it by what is required to maintain a preset temp, this tells the pcm what the load and airflow is.

so it should be ok for me to leave the malibu part on my impala, she seems to work fine,as i said it looks identical from the malibu from the impala,i changed the whole unit, only difference is the part numbers are not the same
