Re: rear axles
My Dealer told me April 2011 at the earliest. They will go to those that have broken axles first, those cracked next. I haven't even got a recall notice yet. I think they are playing games and wish the NTSB would crack down on Ford. They're just waiting everyone out so they don't incur more costs on a model that's already had about 12-13 problems.

Re: rear axles
Well, I sure your enjoying the new car but I was also told by the dealer that if they feel it would take to long to fix ur winnie and it didn't make sense "to the dealership" financially to fix the car (value of winnie vs new milage ur putting on car/rental) they can condem the van and give you trade-in value. Not sure of ur winnie's value or if true? I would look over anything you signed. If you have an older winnie you may just get a check and a notice to return the rental? Mine is only worth about $1200, but more to me so I did take the rental.

Re: rear axles
I seems your dealer was trying to scare you as ford already documented the recall stating what they will do. also seams like a way to get you to buy a new car.wouldnt that be against the law as it gives dealers the power to do whatever they want to anyones vehicle they dont want to fix.

Re: rear axles
I got my axle recall notice today! Woo hoo!
Now I gotta get it in, I'm supposed to be going on vacation in two weeks and driving that thing a couple thousand miles. I looked at it a while ago and didn't see anything but I'd rather they check it and proclaim it good. Thanks again to AF so I'd know about this before Ford decided it was unsafe. |

Re: rear axles
I received the recall today. KBB shows my '01 with a $2500 trade in value and $5400 dealer retail. I hope they don't condemn it when I take it in. With only 114,000 miles and very minor rust spots it's still in good condition. I wonder though, if the axle is in decent shape and the dealer reinforces it, if the axle manages to break later down the road is Ford still liable to fix it again?

Re: rear axles
I talked to my dealer yesterday and the service employee said that if needed there is a brace that Ford has approved putting on the axel. He said that the first step is to get the vehicles inspected and to get them off the road if necessary. He said that Ford will eventually be replacing them all as soon as possible. He did mention the rental car if the vehicle fails the axel inspection. Has anyone else heard of a brace being used to correct the problem? I am leery of that idea vs an actual replacement. My 2002 windstar has 69 K miles and is running great and has one bad body rust spot in front of the left rear wheel well.
What can I look for on the axel for rust? Any certain areas of the axel that I should be looking at? Thanks for the info. Here is a quote from another article to be aware of: "Interestingly enough, this recall does not mention anything about the Windstar's front subframes – another easily corroded area that triggered a second NHTSA investigation in late July. More than 900,000 vehicles could have been affected by this, and we assume that NHTSA's findings did not warrant a full recall. Still, this rear axle issue will be the eleventh recall placed on the Windstar, a model that was only built for a total of nine years. Last edited by eroosa; 10-23-2010 at 09:41 AM. Re: rear axles
I checked my rear axle today and for a van with only 69Kmiles and 8 years old it looked pretty corroded. My surprise was that as I looked at the axle it appears that about a third the way in on both sides some black anti corrosion paint was brushed on my axle?!?! . The van was in the ford dealership earlier this summer and my wife was told that while it was in for the electrical recall that they examined the rear axle fora possible recall was pending in the future. As far as I know cleaning and brushing black anti corrosion paint on the axle is not part of the solution for this issue. Will they now examine it on Tuesday and say "no problem here"? Why would you use a brush or wire wheel on the axle and then paint it if there was no corrosion issue in the first place??
Why would Ford suggest putting a brace on a corroded and weakened rear axle as a possible fix to this issue??? Why would A Ford dealership take the time to clean and paint part of the rear axle and not tell the owner??? Any answers or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Re: rear axles
My axle was broken and I've been in a rental for 3 weeks now. The dealer says that the buy back may or may not happen but if it does he is sure it will apply to me. The problem is that the van is worth more to me than the trade in value! I don't want to be paying for a new car right now!
