89 Dodge Ram D100 Stalls at Idle
Hi yall i have an 89 dodge ram D100 with a 318 engine. I bought this thing not too long ago and the guy said he replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and distributor cap. I have to give the truck gas to get her goin so thats one problem. It has a throttle body fuel injection system with dual injectors. The day i brought in home it stalled at a light while i was idling to turn left. The idle has gotten worse to the point where it stalls unless i put it in neutral and feather the gas pedal while at lights or at home waiting for it to warm up. The engine does not hesitate when i give it gas, it runs perfectly fine aslong as my foot is on the gas or im travelling with a higher rpm. Just in neutral giving the smallest amount of gas stops the jerking. If i let it idle it idles fine sometimes with a slight hesitation approx every 30 sec. When it has its fits (which is more often then not) the engine jerks and hesitates real bad then kinda chokes and stalls. Im assuming the problem is with the gas getting to the engine, that or the air or even the mixture at idle. I am replacing the fuel filter tomorrow incase that is causeing a low fuel pressure. The fuel pump is fine. I have checked the vaccum lines and i gave the throttle body a quick clean by spraying some air intake clean through it. I have considered faulty/ dirty fuel injectors, faulty spark plug wires or spark plugs, bad distributor timing, issues with the tps, and a seriously dirty idle air contro valve however i have yet to check these things. By the way it sounds with the almost perfect timing with the hesitation on normal idle i am leaning more to the electrical problems.
Any ideas would be great. Thanks |

Re: 89 Dodge Ram D100 Stalls at Idle
IIRC there is an idle adjustment screw on the side of the throttle body somewhere; it could be as simple as a little twist with your screwdriver.
Does it do it when cold, warm, or both?

I'd check the guy's work, making sure your plugs cap and rotor are in good shape, then adjust the idle screw.

Re: 89 Dodge Ram D100 Stalls at Idle
Any thoughts on the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve?
