high idle

Sometimes my car idles high and doesnt want to go down, other times itll go down where it should. When its running the throttle isn't even touching the idle screw! If i push the throttle towards the screw the RPMs go down, but its hard to push and goes right back when i take my finger off. I'm not really sure what could be controlling the idle..all i see is the choke and anti-diesel solenoid, so it must be something inside the carb? One thing to note, it seems this happened after i adjusted the timing last week, i know this can effect the idle but i don't really get it when the throttle isnt touching the screw. It must be timing related because another new thing is when i start the car sometimes itll "spark knock". Any suggestions?

Sounds like an unmetered air, or vacuum leak.

SINCE THIS IS A CARB your problem would not be a vacuum leak as this would cause a lower idle since the engine would not be able to suck fuel out of the carb. I suspect that the choke is sticking or your anti stall solenoid is sticking/worn ..when the ac is on this solenoid increases idle speed to prevent stalling.

the vac operated choke pull off's may also be internally ruptered and not fully pulling back, this can cause the high idle choke to stay on , or this cam is stuck..

It is possible the throttle plate bushings are worn causing the throttle plate to stick open at times............

PROBLEM SOLVED. I'm a dummy I had replaced my electric choke a while back.....when i did that, i forgot to make sure the pin was INSIDE the end of the spring with the fold if you know what i'm saying?...so that the spring is able to move the choke off and on, not only one way..obviously mine was only able to turn the choke on but not hold it off.. and as you know when the choke goes on, it also activates high idle.
