99 Tahoe soaked carpet

I posted this earlier but think I put it in the wrong forum . If not sorry for the repeat ..When I run the a/c , water (not antifreeze) is constantly dripping from under the dash and soaking my carpet .I thought it was because the heater valve was not working so I tie wrapped it closed ( rarely need it in Houston ) . Cleaned drain plug and it drains well , pulled glove box and the whole housing for the heater core and evaporator is pouring with condensation . We do have high humidity here but something else most be goin on . Checked vent door ,it's closed ,heater door closed .evaporator fins where completely clogged but cleaned them .This is not a little moisture , more like a 1/4 cup puddle in 20 minutes , Any ideas please

You say that you cleaned the drain plug and it drains well. My thought is that you need to go back and redo that as it's obviously not draining well enough. Or you have a crack in the hose or plenum that's allowing the moisture to run out before it gets to the drain.

Re: 99 Tahoe soaked carpet

The drain hose has a steady stream coming from it thru the firewall , the problem seems to be coming from the outside of the housing which is dripping wet with condensation and I don't know what to do about that . I'm sure this is not normal , it is dripping from the blower motor to the ashtray not just where the evaporator is , it literally looks like the whole rite side of the under-dash is sweating alot .

Re: 99 Tahoe soaked carpet

with the evaporator plugged this is whats going on ....need the air box removed and clean it out ...also how did all this debris get in ...no filters in this air box?

with the use of r134 refrigerent air filters are used to keep the evap coils from this debris restriction ...with the r12 freon of ancient times this was not necessary...

Re: 99 Tahoe soaked carpet

I did take the box apart and the blower off which let me get to the evaporator and did clean it with a dental instrument ( which was a pain )and vacuum which got my air volume back . There is no filter that I saw when I had the blower off . Will re-blow out the drain tube tonite when the wife brings it home .

Re: 99 Tahoe soaked carpet

I may have answered my own problem . At first , with the evaporator 85% stopped up , ( and most likely the drain ) the blower was blowing out where ever it could escape along with the moisture that couldn't drain . Once I cleaned the drain and the evaporator core and put it all back together ,( keep in mind that I'm in HOT ,HUMID ,HOUSTON, ), with an outside fan blowing on me and the inside of dash, hot humid air as I worked, and the now cold operating A/C , WaLa , much condensation. The Wife drove it yesterday and reported no leaks .I did blow out the drain again last nite to be sure and hopefully that's it . Thanks to all that helped .

I figured that was more debris in there...

when things cool down your way remove the air inlet grill on the hood/windshield area and give it a good cleaning ..If the screen is damaged replace with some insect screen ..

Re: 99 Tahoe soaked carpet

I had a very similar problem where I thought it was the a/c evap line but it turned out it wasn't - my passenger front side floorboard kept getting soaked after a good rain and I finally narrowed it down to frame of the car behind the kick panel to the right of your feet. You have to remove the panel and you will see the body of the car and there is a cut-out in the body that allows for water to drop into the compartment that is only 1 inch or so deep, so when it rains and the water runs into this part of the steel frame of the car it will fill up and then spill over into the carpet just behind the kick panel. I ended up getting under the car and spraying water upwards (around where the wheel well and running board come together in the front) to remove any debris and a lot of black muck came out. Call it dumb luck but this solved my problem. BTW the car is a 2002 Tahoe. I hope this helps anyone out there as it took me some time to figure out.
