Hi everyone,
I bought a 1994 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency with 190k on it. One of the issues that i was having with the car. Was that the gas gauge would go down everytime i would go over a bump, making a turn and even when i was at a declined area. Sometimes it would even chug and want to shut off. I noticed it chugs even worst when im in a declined area, and it shuts off when i make a quick stop. But this would only happen when my gas would be at a half tank, if i had it full there was no issues. So i thought it was the fuel pump that was bad, I bought new fuel pump and replaced the old one. It fixed my gauge problem from going down when i went over bumps, it also does not chug when i make a quick stop or shut off. There is still a issue when i make a sharp turn the fuel cuts out, when the car levels its self out, the fuel kicks right back in and feels like i stept on the gas half way throttle. I also tested the car in my neighbors driveway wich is really inclined, i reversed the car into the driveway. It would still chug a little but not as bad as it would with the old fuel pump. What could be the problem? |

Re: 1994 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight (Help)
So i drove the car all today and only put like 7bucks in it. Through out the whole day the gauge did not go down a single bit. It also died on me and i had a feeling that it was low on gas. So pushed the car to the nearest parking lot with help from near by guy that was crossing the street. Went to the gas station picked up some gas and then it started right up.
So to even make matters worst know the gas gauge does not work and it still chugs and shuts off. Hopefully somebody has answer to my problems with this Oldsmobile. Thank you |

Re: 1994 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight (Help)
The gas tank has baffles that help keep some gas around the fuel pump while turning & braking. I seem to recall some posts that on certain years the baffles can break loose. Also the fuel gauges aren't very accurate. I'd guess my 98 Bonneville only has around a 1/3 of a tank left when the gauge shows 1/2.
I'd fill the gas tank & then see how many gallons it takes to fill it when the gauge shows 1/4 of a tank. I believe the tank holds 18 gallons, check your owner's manual. If it takes 15 gallons to fill it then you only have a few gallons left & you simply need to add gas when the gauge shows 1/4 tank. |

Re: 1994 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight (Help)
Glad you mentioned about the baffles as I have the same problem with at 1st a 1/4 tank and now just below 1/2 tank on turning corners and leaving traffic lights. It also stalls out.I don't believe it's the pump and I will tell you later this week after we install a used Lesabre tank.
My filler neck pipe was rotted out too which we recently replaced and would have caused a lot of sand and salt to enter tank possibly causing the baffle welds to rot out.Car had sat on a farm for 15 years being used rarely...lesson learned. More to follow.
