96 S10 Blazer transmission 3 quartz low
I would appreciate some help if possible on my sons S10 Blazer. He tells me it is running funny and has been for ahwile. I drove it and it needs brakes for one thing. Pedal almost to the floor. Inoticed though that when I start off it seemed as though there was little acceleration I shifted it down into low and it took off better but not right. I shifted through all gears and noticed low was not working. That meant I was starting in second. I could shift it manually and it seems fine except first. It was late so I told him check the tranny fluid and it was down 3 quartz. He filled it but it still isnt working in first.
(As a side note the indicator for the shift indicator is not lit. He said when it shifted correctley it would be lit at those times. I did have a shiffting problem before and discovered it was a ignition switch problem. Replaced that years ago and it was fine.) Im wondering if he lost one of the shift solenoids? Do they gum up? Is it possible to run a trans flush through the trans or should I drop the pan and see how bad the fluid is burned? The unfortunate thing is this could have probabley been prevented. Ive told him check all engine fluids as well as the brake condition regullarly. Replaced two heads, no Dex cool. Replaced motor stuck in snow drift pedal to the floor, through rod. Sorry for the long post you see my dilema. Thanks |

Re: 96 S10 Blazer transmission 3 quartz low
I Don't know a whole lot about transmissions but I'm pretty sure if one of the solenoids malfunctioned it would set a DTC, If SES light is on a lot of places scan for free.

Watch and check for leak. Just pull pan and check filter an for any stuff in bottom of pan. Get it on a transmission capable scanner and check transmiision shift data and codes. If any codes post back code no.

Re: 96 S10 Blazer transmission 3 quartz low
Thanks forthe replys. I should add some additional information. I had a better chance to check it out and check the code it was sending. P0753 P0758 P1864 all related trans. Solenoid a circuit, Solenoid B circuit and controller. After clearing the codes it ran fine only to return 2 days later. Im still thinking ignition switch as I know that there was a problem with shifting before and that was the culprit. All codes apearing at one time and the problem dissapearing when ses light reset makes me believe there are no problems with the solenoids and that its related to electrical signal to trans. Any thoughts? I know its not a 97. Thanks

Watch for what code comes back. I would test all wiring and circuit feeds. Let us know how it goes.

Re: 96 S10 Blazer transmission 3 quartz low
Thanks for the reply.
I had my son bring it to the Dealer his friends brother is the service manager there. They will diagnose it for $50.00 and if they do the work he wont have to pay the diagnosis fee. Heres the thing if it throws the solenoid codes and the controller codes at the same time and it may take the whole day or 2 to do it. I sounds to me as it is one common electrical problem (eg. ignition switch) If it were a solenoid alone dont you think it would throw the code for that first and then after a period of time throw the others? Clearing codes brings it out of limp mode until all codes are thrown again. 753, 758, 1886, 1830? Not sure of last one. Im just trying to prevent from being a part replacer. Maybe the dealer will have a definate diagnosis. Also if the pan is dropped is there a good after market drain plug that can be installed? Thanks |

1830 is for a transfer case relay ciruit problem. Electrical ciruit cover many things besides ign switch. Plugins wiring and power and ground feeds fuses and exc. If dealer will check it for 50$ Let him have at it. let us know what you find.

Re: 96 S10 Blazer transmission 3 quartz low
Just an update. The dealer came back with a diagnosis. The ignition switch. Is it a big deal to replace? I checked the how to for 97 Blazer. Is it pretty much the same?

Re: 96 S10 Blazer transmission 3 quartz low
Just an update. Installed the ignition switch and all is well. Purchased the ignition switch from AC Delco $88.00 delivered.
