Re: Subaru 1.8L EA82 Engine
The EA82 was available from 85-94 in GL, DL, GL-10, RX, and XT
The xt versions are the same, except with flat belt pulleys. There are 3 variants, a carburetor with hitachi or carter-weber, with 8.5:1 compression ratio, and single port intake. There was also an SPFI (single point fuel injection) which shared the same head design, with the addition of a threaded egr port, and the block has a compression of 9.0:1. And yet, there were MPFI and MPFI turbo, both sharing the same block and heads, with the turbo version being 7.7:1 compression, and the n/a variant at 9.5:1 compression.
These engines can be swapped in place of an ea81, as far as the bellhousing and motor mount fitments. There will be clearance issues with the distributor and the brake master cylinder.
Swapping in a ea82t in place of an ea81 will require a modification to the engine crossmember to clear the turbo up-pipe. This is not an issue if you are replacing an ea81t. The same is true for replacing an ea82 with an ea8t.
Otherwise, the turbo engine crossmember can be fitted to a not turbo car to retrofit in a turbo engine of either ea81 or ea81.
