Engine shuts off while driving

my 1991 tempest keeps shutting off while i drive it. i have no idea whats wrong with it. a few people have taken a look at my car and have suggested that my battery connection is loose or dirty. i have cleaned and tightened the cennectors and that didnt solve anything. something to do with the distributor cap has also been suggested as well as a problem with the thermostat. the last person to take a look at my car said that my car was rather hot for the distance i drove and that my engine could just be over heating. the gauge doesnt even read over the half way mark it only moves back and forth between 1/4 and 1/2. this is very dangerous cause the whole thing shuts off right in the middle of the road and i lose the power to my steering and brakes as well. the engine doesnt even clunk when it shuts off. it shuts off quite smooth for some reason. im going in to get it looked at by a professional tomorrow to hopefully figure out whats wrong with it and to fix it.

my friend has an older firebird and he says he used to have the same problem and then they did something woth the thermostat and the problem was solved. when i find out from the mechanic tomorrow i will post what i find out. is anybody else having this problem? does any body have any theories as to what is wrong?
