Presuming the level in the expansion tank is not dropping, and as random as the overheating occurs, a thermostat is a reasonable guess.
Another potential cause might be a deteriorating lower radiator hose which can collapse under suction from the water pump, but that kind of thing typically only happens at sustained speeds, such as in highway driving.
Another common cause of inconsistent cooling is air accumulation in the system, but that usually creates more consistent episodes of overheat.

Thank you for the reply. You don't know when it will overheat,its just whenever. It may not do it for another 6 months. It will raise,you let it cool a bit then its good for another day in the future. My guess is the thermostate. Thanks for the help.
