Engine even worth fixing?

To keep this short and simple, basically, was driving my GF's 92 geo prizm the other day and it started making some pretty loud rattling and clanging from the engine, went to find a spot to pull over but before we could the engine made a loud bang and we lost power; coasted it to the side of the road and it makes a pretty terrible metal grinding noise if its in gear, but it doesn't move and accelerating only makes the noise worse (Automatic transmission by the way). It sounds similar to marbles in a blender. Popped the hood to find that the oil leaked out from somewhere, checked the dipstick and the only sign of oil was at the very tip of the stick. It is also stuck in neutral (rolls in park or any other gear). Basically, I have no idea where to start diagnosing the issues, I'm assuming the transmission is shot and it probably has some amount of engine damage. Any feedback of where to start looking is appreciated.
