i would do a compression check and it was over heating because the belt you may have blown a head gasket when you say over heating because it only takes one over heating and will blow head gasket and or crack the head. thats why i say take a compression test on all 4 cylenders. and the heat guage not working the sensor should be at the goose neck where you replaced the thermostat?
