switching to synthetic will not cause any harm to your engine. Only your wallet. A 97 GSR will be using non-synthetic and you should stick to it. Unless you completely dry out all of the oil from your engine and replace it with synthetic there is no reason to spend $3 a quart for oil. Just stuck with what your manufacturer specifies. there is a reason they specify that oil. They tested it to be the best for their engine.
