Actually it isn't. The A3 is based on the Golf, more than 60% of their parts are the same, including engines and the chassis. The BMW handles better, engine sounds better and the interior is VERY much better. You can spec a 1 series to almost 5 series interior level if you wish to do so. When the 130i and the M1 arrives, there won't be any real competition for it.
