Maybe I can just explain it. It's on a 93 Toyota Paseo, but i suspect it's common to many vehicles.
Basically on the end of the camshaft that extends into the distributor there is a metal piece that has a blade to structure on one side. Sitting directly next to that is a magnetic pickup looking thing that I'm sure is picking up the blade as it rotates around.
