From all I have read, if your unable to verify the replacement of the tensioners from service records, if available, the engine has to be opened for a visual inspection. Most of the time before failing, but not always, the tensioners will rattle when starting up cold. My suggestion, to avoid the sleepless nights thinking about a $12,000 replacement engine if the tensioners fail and tear it up, is to have them replaced which is approx $1,500. Not dirt cheap but much less than the alternative.
