That number is displacement. Think of the cylinder as just a simple cylinder. The piston is at the bottom of the stroke, and the cylinder is filled with water. The piston moves up to the top of the stroke. The volume of the water that just sloshed out is the displacement of that cylinder.

To find the displacement of an engine, pi x bore^2 x stroke x y, where y is the number of cylinders.

^ Bore is the width of the cylinder, and stroke is the length of the linear travel of the piston.
