Actually no...that's a very common misconception. The Delorean shared many common parts with "regular" cars of it's day. In fact, the Eagle Premier had an updated version of the exact same engine. Most mechanical parts are readily available from your local auto parts store, and Delorean specific parts are still readily available from any of the Delorean specialists. Delorean Motor Company in Texas for example has thousands upon thousands of replacement Delorean body panels, and they aren't really any more expensive than parts for a more common car.

That said, the Delorean did suffer badly from late 70's early 80's regulations and did only have 130 hp on tap. If you're looking for a stylish car that's unique yet still a great daily driver, the Delorean works great. If you're looking for something to tear up the local street races with, I suggest you look elsewhere. However, Delorean Motor Company also currently offers a performance package for the Delorean's PRV engine which raises output to 200 hp...they can either rebuild your current engine to this specification, or you can order a brand new 0 mile engine with 200 hp. They also offer a lower, firmer suspension that allows the Delorean to look and act the way the engineers originally intended it to.

$15,000 for a daily driver Delorean is most certainly do-able...while most decent condition ones go for closer to $18,000, it's certainly not uncommon to find daily driven, decently maintained Deloreans in the $15,000 range.
