Should I just clean them with soap and water? I'd like to give them a protective/shiny coat if possible; can I just use normal car body wax on them?

Thanks.
I use car soap to wash the wheels ..then spray a silicone spray on the metal or on a cloth then wipe down the metal with this..

If you have rims that are open to the front rotors best use the cloth wet with silicone...

in the rust belt the silicone has kept the metal looking good from the road chemicals....where you live this is not a factor...but you got all that dust ..
