Most automatic transmissions react very badly when towed long distances, when the engine is not running. The lack of pressurized lubrication means that the moving parts can be starved of oil and be damaged.

However, the Cherokee, Wrangler and some other SUV's have a neutral position in the transfer case, which allows for long-distance towing without damage.
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what you mean by putting the transfer case in neutral. The front wheels will be off the road, so I assume that takes out any complications with 4WD. Please correct me if this is not the case.
If the gear shift for the rear wheels is in neutral, is that enough to not damage the transmission or differential?

Thanks again for your input,
John
