Yes, the first two were regular pencil drawings while the third (Audi) started as a pencil drawing and was then covered with various shades of gray paper (it was a college art project).
I don't know about making a concept car (haven't really thought about it) but I have thought about scratchbuilding one of the cars my family owns for which there is no kit...having the real thing is great reference material!
