99 4R V6 Ltd - Sudden drop in MPG

I bought my 4R (V6Ltd) back in 2003 and I have meticulously kept track of the MPG since I purchased it. Since then I have consistently averaged around 19 to 20. Some tanks getting 22 some getting as low as 18.

Recently my MPG has dropped to around 16MPG. Today’s tank even came in at 15MPG! I am wondering what may be the culprit for this sudden drop. My driving habits haven’t changed drastically, though I don’t drive as far (2 miles each way) and the weather has gotten cold recently (40s and 30s at night). In winters past my mileage didn’t drop this much. The power output also seems fine, i.e. no change.

I am wondering if it is “stuck” in some kind of warm-up mode the whole time? Could the plugs have been fouled by a bad tank of gas and it isn’t igniting right? I have no warning lamps (no check engine lights) or anything that seems odd except for the drop in MPG. I don't smell gas fumes so I don't think that there is a fuel leak...(I keep it garaged).

Any theories or ideas of where to start looking would be great!

Regards,

I have a 1998 V6 4Runner that runs great up to 4000-4100 RPM (or so) and then coughs and sputters like it is hitting a rev-limiter. No check-engine light. I have replaced the spark plugs, air filter, cleaned the throttle-body, cleaned the MAF, replaced the fuel filter, and the problem continues. Anyone else had the same problem or know what to check next?

99 4Runner Power Antenna

I am having a problem with my power antenna. A while back the mast stopped going up and down and was stuck in the “up” position”. After some checking I figured it was the mast that was broke and I found a new one on eBay for $18. I installed this new mast pretty easily according to the Haynes manual. The problem is that when the antenna goes to extend it appears that the motor doesn’t know when to shut off so even though it is fully extended the motor keeps trying to push it up more and you can hear the teeth grinding until the motor “times-out” and stops. It retracts just fine and stops when it hits the bottom.

My guess is that the motor isn’t getting the “signal” to stop extending the antenna. So my question is does anyone know what tells the motor to stop extending the antenna? Is it a mechanical clutch thing? Or is it merely timing?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Exhaust Leak/Burned Valve

Can someone please refresh my memory. Status - pretty sure I've got a cracked exhast manifold - haven't pulled the heat shield yet but it definitely sounds like one under the hood. Engine runs like one cylinder is not firing or compression is weak/gone. Engine getting harder to start, is idling rough and consistently missing on one cylinder. Pulled MAF sensor and wires are clean and intact. Check Engine light is on and won't extinguish.
The Question: Can an exhaust leak at the Head/Manifold joint cause an exhaust valve to burn over time? I thought the leak I was hearing was at the welds of my muffler (until it fell completely out of the car last week without any real warning). Now that it's welded back in, I can really hear what I think is a pretty severe leak under the hood. :banghead:

Forgot the add previously - it's a '98 with a 2.7 liter 4 banger.

First Gen 4Runner 1989 V6 had a serious hesitation when running cold. Right after start up it's pretty good and when it's up to temperature it's smooth as. In between those times I get a dip of about 200-300 rmp when taking off in first. Have to rev it up to take off and it's slow off. If it stalls it is super hard to start, then goes and rpm's drop out and stalls again. Third try usually it goes and have to gas it as your usually at a stop... not so good.

PCV valve? Fuel pump, filter and lines have all been changed. Idles a bit low when it's warm, should I just turn the screw a little, give a bit more fuel?

Thanks
