Alternator going out?

Yesterday, I took a 200 mile road trip in my '00 Intrigue and half way into it I noticed my mileage display was flickering like crazy and I could hear whining through my speakers which varied with engine speed.

Today, I started it and the flickering and whining was gone. I put a voltmeter on the alternator and it's putting out 14.8 volts when cold, once it warms up it drops to 13.9v, which seems normal to me. I noticed it now squeals when I put an electrical load on it, but I suppose that could just be a loose belt.

Should I be worried? I plan to drive it to California from Colorado in the next 3 weeks, but now I'm kind of afraid to...

I have been having intermittent problems with my transmission. In city traffic after the car gets hot my transmission will start upshifting hard. It only happens in the city and it doesn't happen but a couple of times a week if that. I took it to a shop and they said I have two transmission codes-

PO 742- TCC CKT stuck on
PI 811- Max adapt and long shift

They wanted to pull the transmission take it all apart and charge me $500 to see what was wrong. I wanted to get your guy's take on this before I took this plunge. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

You probably need to replace the sending unit wiper arm. The cheapest way to do this is to order harness kit 15824379 and scavenge the wiper arm out of it. It's about a 40 buck part and a 40 minute repair (if you don't take pictures).

Brake Warning Lights? Traction Off Light? ABS Light?

Do you have the LX5 with the Bosch 5.3 ABS? Do you have the following dash lights on : "Service Vehicle Soon (yellow), Trac Off (yellow), Anti-Lock (yellow) and Brake (red)? If so, it is likely that your Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBTCM) is bad. (sometimes they go bad intermittently). To confirm, you would need to go have a special brake scanner put on the vehicle (most Autozones don't have these) - if it has a code C0550 the most common issue is a dead EBTCM.

Follow along as I replaced mine this evening. Was a piece of cake.

So i'm failing emissions tests because of three codes.

My car is a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 3.5

p0304 is cylinder 4 misfiring. Does anyone know how the cylinders are numbered in a 99 intrigue 3.5 engine? I thought odd numbers were on one side and even on another so i took off the front side coil pack thingy and pulled the center plug (assuming it was either cylinder 3 or 4). Replaced the spark plug but ultimately pulled the other two and cleaned the housing and plugs because they were completely soaked and filled with oil. I'm assuming this means i need to replace some rings? Misfire didn't go away so tomorrow i'll do the other side.

p0141 is Oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2. Has anyone replaced this themselves that could throw out some input on how easy it is to do yourself as opposed to a shop. From what i can dig up that specific O2 sensor is the one right before the catalytic converter but i'm not sure. Autozone is gonna hit me for 70 bucks for a new one so i can't imagine what my mechanic will charge.

p0442 Is a small leak in the Evaporation system. The most common cause is a faulty gas cap. The gas cap has been replaced and still the code pops up. Does anyone have any probable causes or dealt with this in the past?

Thanks in advance for any help!

My 2001 Olds Intrigue's heater blows cold air. The coolant gets hot, but doesn't circulate through the heater core. I checked the core circulation by disconnecting the heater hoses and blowing air through; clean coolant comes out the other end. At the engine end of the heater hose connections, there's a black, cylindrical component. It's screwed into in a cast aluminum coolant manifold and appears to be an electric control valve. With the controls set to heat, I measured 12v and 5 v on two adjacent pins in its 5 pin connector. Could this component be a faulty heater control valve?

Took a couple of hours but I was taking pictures and was figuring out shortcuts. Check it out at http://99intrigue.shutterfly.com/waterpump

Several times to day while driving the anti lock brake, brake, and airbag light would come on at the same time and the dash lights and head lights would get brighter. Then when I would push on the gas the lights would dim and depending on how much gas I gave the car the lights would temporarily go out. When trying to go up my driveway (slight incline at the bottom) I could not make it up on several tries. Each time I tried to get up the incline in the driveway the lights would come on and when I push on the gas the engine would rev but the car would not move. So i tried to restart several times and keep getting the same problem. Then I shut off the car and used the remote start and did not have any problems afterwards until I took the car out later tonight and got the 3 dash lights coming on with the lights getting brighter when the 3 dashlights were illuminated then when gas was push the lights would go away/out. Does this sound like the ignition problem? 2000 intrigue 3.5l
