1996 4AFE cylinder head issues

I bought my neighbor's '96 Corolla with the 1.6L 4AFE engine. I pulled the head to do the head gasket, but the machine shop measured the warpage at over 20 thousandths, so I need a new one.

My problem is the EGR port design. My head has the EGR passage built into the intake manifold under the #4 runner. There is a port on the head that directly feeds the intake. All of the heads at the junkyards do not have this port. It seems that they used an entirely different EGR design that uses a pipe to connect to the block/exhaust manifold somewhere. Is this a common problem? Is there any way around this issue? I doubt this is a California car, since it was leased and then purchased from the dealer by my neighbor (I'm assuming she's the original owner), and we're in Ohio.

Edit:

According to a manual for the 4AFE engine (in a Celica, not sure if the Corolla engine is the same), I have a California emissions exhaust manifold. I'm assuming that is why my egr design is different. The VIN comes back as being built in Canada.

mysterious whining/tapping noise

I have a 99 corolla, the cheapest model, no power (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/#) windows etc. The car started about 6 months ago making a noise every now and then like a bearing chatter under the hood. It was very intermittent.

The noise suddenly got worse in the summertime one day when it was very hot, but it stopped at the end of the day. I managed to get the dealer to hear it and they said it was the tensioner pulley, which they replaced. A couple of days later I heard the same noise again, but then it stopped for about 6 months.

With the cold weather, the noise came back tenfold. It sounds like a whine like the power steering pump and an intermittent rattle like a really bad valve tap, and it is much worse when the car is hot. It happens while the car is sitting still and idlling. If I put slight tension on the steering wheel the noise stops completely.

I had the car back to the dealer again for diagnosis and they said this time it was the power steering pump. So, I had a good friend who has done major work on all kinds of cars help me out changing out the pump. That was yesterday. Today the noise is exactly the same as before we changed out the pump.

I am certain it is coming from the area near the power steering pump and idler pulley, and I had also changed out the alternator last year but the noise is definitely lower and farther back anyway, definitely not near the alternator.

Any ideas? I work with a bunch of guys who all work on cars a lot and one of them thought maybe a valve sticking in the steering assembly? Any hints are welcome!

1997 Corolla Battery troubles

Alright so here's the deal:
Purchased a new car battery for my 1997 Toyota Corolla about a month ago. About a week ago car would not start so I checked the battery and the terminals for both positive and negative sides where corroding (especially the positive side). I then cleaned off both terminals and both sides of the battery with hot water and baking soda. The corrosion completely removed I got another jump for the car again. I ran it for a while (unfortunately I do not have a battery charger) in order to get it charged, but this was to no avail. I then removed some electrical tape from the negative side and found that the cable had indeed began to corrode. I am thinking about buying new battery chords and terminals. Does anyone have an idea how much this should cost (hours and/or dollar amount)? I've never had my car serviced and I don't wanna get the shaft from local mechanics.

gear selector stiff n hard when shifting from park to reverse and viceversa

I have a 2000 corolla with an automatic transmission and about 115500 miles on it. The problem that I have is that the gear selector feels really hard and stiff when I have to shift from park to reverse and viceversa. Other than that the transmission is working pretty ok - as soon as I move to reverse/drive it engages quickly and without any jerks. Any ideas on what could be the problem with the gear selector and how much it would cost to fix...

Thanks for your help!
