I have a 1997 nissan altima with 80000 miles on it. Whenever I have drove it since I got it the rpm's would stay a little higher. For example im going down the expressway at 70 mph and 3500 rpms, or i would have to go to 4000 rpm's of a start to get speed. randomly on my way home from work the rpm's go down to 2500 at 70. I never touched the shifter,or the overdrive. Now whenever I drive it, I need much less rpm's to get up to speed....any ideas what could be wrong?

other info
i bought it from a older lady, she didn't drive it much.
Oil changed every 3000
Tranny fluid never changed (first assumption)
.
Thanks

I have a 2006 Altima that just as of today doesnt want to start. I troubleshooted and came to the conclusion (by checking each one individually) that none of the 4 spark plugs are producing a spark. which leads me to my next point. if everythings turning over n working what would cause all 4 not to produce a spark. Theres a little black box on the side of the throttlebody (a relay box?) that is making a high pitched humm. does anyone know what this is and what if any sensors are connected to it. I opened the throttle body manually a couple times to ensure it wasnt stuck and it started for a brief min then died. so any help/info would be greatly appreciated thanks and sorry for the book but i tried to fit everything ive found up to this point.

97 Altima rough idling and stalling

For some time now my 97 altima (232000miles) has been acting up. On a cold day when I start it up, it run good for a minute and then it idles really rough. It revs to about 2000rpms and then it drop to under 500rpms; it does this until it stalls. When I try to start it, it turns over good but does not start right away. When I get it started it putts and sputters and blows out black smoke. There is also alot of exhaust fumes. When driving it goes fine, but when we come to a stop the idle drops like it wants to stall and sometimes it does. At time it bucks while accelerating and feels like its choking or like its not getting enough fuel. We had the plugs, distributor with new caps and rotors, knock and crank sensor changed. The mechanic checked the fuel filter, fuel pressure, MAF sensor and the idle control, but it still acts up. I checked the vacuum lines running to the EGR and saw one of them has a small crack. Could this be the cause of all this or could it be something else? There is also a small hissing sound coming from the back of the motor by the intake manifold. Could this be another cause?

I recently had the SES light come on I had it checked out and the guy took off the gas cap and turned over the large o-Ring and replaced it, reset the light and all has been well until last night. I recently fill up with gas. I went to start the car and let off the key before the engine started. The next try it started right up but SES light is on. I wonder if I could reset the light and try the o-ring trick again before i pay to have it checked? I might just buy a new cap. Not sure what to do! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Railroadman

Hey I replied to a previous thread about a roaring noise in the rear of my 03 Altima. Don't know if the fellow is still a member or not. You can hear it at low speeds but after 40 it gets a lot louder and sounds like it gets louder the faster you go. Any Ideas?
Thanks Railroadman

The coolant reservoir bubbles when the car is running. It starts the moment the car even starts to warm up a little. The radiator cap is brand new. The thermostat is not that old either. once the car warms up the valve cover feels really hot and I'm worried because I know it has aluminum heads and I don't want any damage to it. does anyone have any ideas. I've been told a few things but I'm not sure where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!!
